Story
Thanks for visiting our fundraising page.
In July 2009, a group of young people from Barra will travel over to Zambia on a return exchange trip, spending two weeks with the boys at the Mthunzi Centre on the outskirts of the main city of Lusaka. The boys who visited our island in August 2008, are looking forward to another meeting of two different but very similar cultures. The main theme of the exhange is 'Our Work - Our Music,' focusing on traditional industries and connected music, which the boys throughly enjoyed while on Barra - as you can see from the main photo after a fantastic visit to the local fish processing factory!
We need your help to get to Zambia. Why? Well to light up all the faces of these young lads on arrival will be enough to make our trip worthwhile. With little money to live on and a volatile education system, our two weeks will be spent teaching the boys our work music, especially our wealth of Gaidhlig work music, and the boys will return the favour by teaching us some of their work songs in Bemba, Nyanja and some of their other languages! As the boys visited our main industries while on the island, we will spend time visting the main industries in Zambia. There will also be a focus on religious music.
Their traditional music gives them the roots they need in a vulnerable society, while the exchange visits give them the means to fly.
Please help us be with the boys for two weeks by simply sponsoring us on Justgiving. Thank you in advance. Taing mhor.
