My name is Beatrice Currie. I am in Year 11 at Abbott’s Hill, and am the Clan Captain for MacDonald.
I have been in the Scouting movement since 1997 with the 12th Harpenden Scout Group, and subsequently with the Harpenden Explorer Scout Group. Harpenden and Wheathampstead Scouts have a long relationship with the Hohoe Scouts in Ghana. (Hohoe is a medium sized town 75 miles from Accra, the capital city). In the past, we have supported the Ghana Scouts by sending out old uniforms, Scout books, badges, and raised funds for Ghana Leaders to undertake training. In 2005, I was lucky enough to visit Hohoe, and help in the construction of a computer room of 9 interconnected computers, giving the Scouts and their families the opportunity to learn computer skills.
2007 marked the centenary year of Scouting, and in recognition of this, the Explorer Scouts, have decided to embark on a project to further help Scouts in Hohoe, Ghana and their community. This initiative involves the building of a joint Scout and Community Centre, and the installation of a number of donated computers. The expedition will last 6 weeks and will run from mid July to the end of August 2008.
To achieve this goal, the Harpenden Scouts need to raise a total of £35,000 to get ourselves there and to cover the purchase of a 2 acre site, building materials, tools and safety equipment. Wherever possible and practical, and in order to help the local community, items such as tools will be purchased locally in Ghana. We will then build the community centre, alongside our fellow Ghanaian Scouts and supported by the Paramount Chieftain of the Volta Region, in this life-improving project for the Hohoe community.
Many thanks for your support.
