Cent Cols Challenge · 15 June 2012

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

In September 2012 I'll be undertaking the Cent Cols Challenge. A challenge of some epic numbers, in its simplest form it involves cycling up 100 Cols in the Pyrenees in 10 days.

The reason for this particular form of torture is to support the Alzheimers Society - which works to improve the quality of life of people affected by dementia. Those who know me reasonably well will know that my father suffered for a number of years with Alzheimers, so I have seen first hand what a destructive disease dementia is.

There are 900,000 people in the UK with dementia and I would imagine that in some form, every one of you reading this will have experienced a friend or relative with dementia.

The Cent Cols Challenge involves cycling up some of the legendary Cols of the Pyrenees, including Col d'Aspin, Port du Bales, Col de Peyresourde, Col de Portillon, Col De Menthe, Col d'Aubisque and of course the Col du Tourmalet (All of which feature in this year's Tour De France).

For the stattos amongst you, during the 10 days, I will:

- Ascend approx 109 Cols (assuming all goes to plan!)
- Cycle 2000km
- Vertically ascent 150,000 feet (5 times up Everest)
- Burn around 80,000 calories

I am hugely excited (yet slightly apprehensive) about tackling this challenge and your donations and support, no matter how small, will provide me with additional motivation and momentum during those darker moments.

Please dig deep.

Thank you.
