Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

We are running the London Landmarks Half Marathon in April 2024, in memory of our dear Dad and Father In Law, Pete, who died on 2 April 2020 from Mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive form of lung cancer.

We now want to do what we can to raise awareness of Mesothelioma and raise funds to help others, and their families who have been affected by this cruel disease.

Throughout Pete's short illness, his mental and physical strength was outstanding. All throughout Becky & Laura's childhood, he would refer to things being in the power of your mind. Something that stood out so boldly through his final stages of life, was how he, not only thought this, but embodied it. Pete's courage to fight against the disease with such resilience, humility and grace was remarkable. Glimmers of mental strength and positivity that drove him, time and time again.

We will complete this challenge with Pete at the forefront of our minds, and if we have half his physical and mental strength, we will do amazingly! ❤️

Quite aptly the race takes place a few days after the fourth anniversary of Pete's death.

Wish us luck!

If you are able to donate an amount, we would be very grateful and it will go a long way to support Mesothelioma UK.

Thank you,

Becky, Laura and Jon. XXX

A central register of Asbestos and phased removal of Asbestos from all buildings - Petitions (parliament.uk)

Asbestos was used extensively from the 1950s through to the mid-1980s. The importation, supply and use of asbestos was banned in 1999, but it might still be in any building built before 2000. Some estimates say as many as 1.5 million UK buildings may contain it.

Each year as many as 2,700 people in the UK are diagnosed with mesothelioma, a form of cancer where 9/10 cases are caused by exposure to asbestos – meaning the majority could have been avoided through better asbestos management.

Up to 60% of people die in the first year after diagnosis.

Based on recommendations made last year by the Work and Pensions Committee, Mesothelioma UK are asking the government for a central register so that we know where all the asbestos is and in what condition it is. We’re also asking them to set a timeframe for the safe removal of Asbestos, prioritising the high risk settings such as schools anhospitals.
