My son Jorge was born on Sunday 7th November 2010. 5 days later on Thursday 11 November 2010; he was rushed to West Cumberland Hospital seriously ill. On examination the Consultants made the quick decision to transfer him to the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle. After a hairy 1hr 15mins ambulance ride, not knowing if they were going to get there in time, Jorge was put onto ECMO Life Support machine (of which there are only four hospitals with these in the whole of the UK) and diagnosed with IVC thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary embolism. Blood thinning medication was administered to try to dissolve the thrombosis; he then underwent life threatening surgery on his left lung to remove blood clots. He fought bravely and finally managed to come off the ECMO machine after ten days, but remained on a ventilator for a further five days. Following five weeks in hospital in Newcastle, with the expertise of the team at PICU (Paediatric Intensive Care Unit) Freeman, Jorge was discharged home where he is making a good recovery. He continues to be monitored by the Consultants both at West Cumberland and Freeman Hospitals, who are pleased with his progress.

Jorge owes his life to the teams whose knowledge, skill and dedication were able to not only save his life but make him better again.

We, the Edgar family, would like to give something back to these incredible people to say thank you for saving our precious Jorge and to help them continue their specialist life saving work for other sick children at both hospitals.
