Story
In 2018, my younger brother Callum took his own life only a few weeks after his 18th birthday. He was an incredible Skier, downhill mountain biker and we shared a love of the outdoors. I started running in September 2021 when I was struggling with my own mental health and have since completed 5 half marathons. In Callum’s memory, I am currently aiming to complete 18 races (half marathons and a marathon) by 2028, 10 years since his death, a race for each year of his life.
I have decided to run the great north half marathon for the lighthouse club as I work in the construction industry and want to raise awareness about the mental health struggles many people in the industry face. There are some terrifying statistics surrounding mental health in the construction industry such as every single working day in the UK two construction workers take their own life.
The Lighthouse club is the only charity that provides mental, physical, and financial well-being support to the construction community and their families. The lighthouse club provides a 24/7 Construction Industry Helpline which provides free and confidential support
services and this is complemented by the free Construction Industry Helpline App which offers expert guidance on a huge variety of well-being issues. Lighthouse club also offers free mental health and well-being training for the construction community.
So far I have completed-
1. Cardiff Winter Warmer Half marathon February 2022, 2. Salisbury plain Half Marathon June 2022, 3. Bristol Half Marathon September 2022, 4. Bristol Half Marathon May 2023, 5. Cheddar Gorge Challenge June 2023
