Beirut emergency response

Alberto Challita is raising money for CARE International UK

Beirut emergency response · 11 August 2020

In Beirut, a devastating explosion has killed over 100 people and injured thousands more. CARE is rapidly responding to the emergency, and your urgent support right now can help save lives.

Story

I am raising funds to support relief efforts for victims of the Beirut explosion, in order to provide life-saving food, shelter and medical supplies. Any contribution would be timely and greatly valued by people that were severely impacted.

I will personally match up to £10,000 worth of donations, and BP will match up to £4,000 worth of donations. So each £1 donated could provide up to £3 of relief.

A devastating explosion in the port of Beirut has caused grief and destruction to a country that was already dealing with a multitude of crises.

200 lives lost (and rising)

5,000 injured, including many that are still in critical conditions

300,000 people have had their homes destroyed

15bn USD estimated cost of economic damage

This humanitarian disaster could not have come at a worse time for a country that has been dealing with an economic crisis that led the Government to default, and locals not having access to funds in their bank accounts. The currency has lost 80% of its value in the last year, and caused soaring inflation and unemployment. Not to forget a refugee crisis that has been overwhelming the country for the last decade as it is host to over 1 million Syrian refugees.

The healthcare system, which was already stretched in dealing with the COVID-19 patients, is now in dire need of aid to treat patients of the explosion. Four hospitals were destroyed by the explosion, which is another huge setback to the system.

Your donations would be go to CARE International, which is a UK registered charity working on the ground in Lebanon. They will use the proceeds to provide life-saving food, shelter and medical supplies for people that are most impacted.
