Hello friend,
Welcome to my JustGiving page. I want to express my gratitude for taking the time to read my story.
My fitness journey began roughly nine years ago, and along the way, I discovered a love for punching the bags as hard as I could in boxing. While I always harboured a desire to compete, fear got the best of me. This all changed when my brother shared an Instagram link with me about a free eight-week, charity-driven, professional boxing training program.
This opportunity seemed like a sign for me to finally take the plunge, not just for my personal growth but also for the greater good. Initially, I wasn't sure which charity to support. But as fate would have it, something extraordinary happened.
A few days before signing up, I found myself in sheffield city centre. Normally, I'd avoid engaging with strangers, but this time was different. Two guys approached me, and I couldn't help but listen. They shared the remarkable work of the National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS), emphasising its vital role as the leading international charity for deaf children in developing countries, including my home country, you know it ,Kenya, and neighboring nations like Tanzania and Uganda, as well as India and beyond.
These guy opened my eyes to a stark reality: there are 34 million deaf children worldwide, with a staggering 80% residing in some of the world's poorest regions. What got to me the most was the fact that these regens lack access to proper healthcare, leaving children undiagnosed and without the technology they need, such as hearing aids.
Also, their communities often lack awareness of sign language, creating barriers to communication and isolating these children from their families and society. This isolation, in turn, hinders their ability to learn and access education or friends.
My own experience played a role in my decision to support NDCS. During my school years, I attended a primary school where deaf children were given the right amount of help and care. We had teachers who could sign and we were got taught some sign language. I do wish I learned more of it though. I strongly belive every deaf child should have this sort of environment created for them in their community so they too feel like they belong. Sign language should be a world spoken language.
As the guys continued to share these heartbreaking realities, I couldn't help but wonder how I, with an irregular income source, could commit to a monthly donation scheme. I even considered telling him the truth to end the conversation. However, an inner voice encouraged me to keep listening.
He went on to explain how my contributions could make a difference. That's when I was truly convinced and sold on the idea of supporting NDCS. So when the registration day arrived for Ultra White Collar Boxing, and we were told we could pick our own charities I picked this one. Because I believe all children no matter the shape, size, colour, ability or disabilitIty deserve the same opportunity
Please, I invite you to join me on this journey of change. Your contribution can help break the cycle of isolation and provide deaf children with the support, education, and communication tools they desperately need. Together, we can make a lasting impact on their lives and empower them to reach their full potential. Thank you for being part of this transformative journey.
