Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I’m taking part in #REDJanuary - my aim is to do to something active everyday. For every calorie I burn, I’ll be donating a sum of money to Mind Charity.
RED January is founded on research that physical activity can have a positive impact on your mental health. We all know that being physically active is good for our bodies. But our physical health and mental health are closely linked – so physical activity can be very beneficial for our mental health and wellbeing too.
We are all busy people and there will always be demands on your time. But be demanding of yourself too: make time and create the space you need to build in your own form of mindfulness. Your mind, body and those around you will thank you for it.
Around one in three people experiences a mental health condition during their lives, but research has shown that some groups are less likely to feel confident seeking help than others. Furthermore, racial disparities in both access to treatment and prevalence of mental health conditions have been well documented in the UK.
For example, the Race Disparities report (2017) and a report by Public Health England (2018) presented evidence suggesting that BIPOC communities are at high risk of mental ill health and are disproportionately impacted by social detriments associated with mental illness.
Whilst the White Caucasian population experienced the highest rates for suicidal thoughts, suicide rates are higher among young men of Black African, Black Caribbean origin, and among middle aged Black African, Black Caribbean and South Asian women than among their White British counterparts.
The evidence also paints a more worrying picture: once in contact with mental health services, BIPOC are more likely to report harsh experiences of services and poorer outcomes.
This January, the RED community will be challenging themselves to move every day, their way. Whether running, swimming, cycling or choosing their favourite fitness activity, REDers will be going the extra mile to support themselves and others.
Their fitness and fundraising efforts combined with your generosity will help Sport in Mind reach and empower more people with mental health challenges to experience the life-changing benefits of physical activity. Thank you.
