This summer, Ben and Jon are going on an adventure...
We are planning to do an epic banger rally that will be over 2000 miles long, hitting 12 countries in just 9 days in a vehicle that costs less than £500. Some people would pick a practical, comfortable vehicle to do this in, leisurely wafting through the European continent. However, where would be the fun (or challenge) in that?!
We've purchased a 20 year old Daihatsu Hijet. The van has no leg room, no aircon and a tiny engine under the seats just to make it even warmer! The van is full of character but this mainly comes from the various ‘quirks’ such as the mirrors folding in as you accelerate, missing door handles and the constant risk of it falling to pieces.
The plan is to make the van look like a submarine, with hatches, a periscope, propeller and fins as well as adding needlessly complicated control panels on the inside. It’ll even blow bubbles out of the back as it travels along! With all this added weight (and the tiny engine), we’ll probably have to push our submarine over the Alps (but we can roll down the other side right?!).
The reason for all this foolishness (besides a lifetime of doing things the difficult way) is to try and raise some money for the very worthy Tracy Sollis Leukaemia Trust. This independent charity has the aim and objective of promoting and assisting in the prevention and relief of sickness, suffering and distress of those afflicted with leukaemia, particularly but not exclusively by the provision of funded research.
Note that all of the money raised will be going to the charity. We are funding the rally, fuel, accommodation, vehicle etc. ourselves to ensure we can raise as much as possible. We’ll be keeping a blog of sorts on our Facebook page where you can watch the madness unfold.
Much Love,
Ben & Jon
