DUHWS Wainwrights 2022 · 2 July 2022 ·

Durham University Hill Walking Society are aiming to complete all 214 Wainwrights in the Lake District within 24 hours while raising funds to support County Durham region Mountain Rescue (TWSMRT) and Lake District Mountain Rescue (LDSAMRA)

Story

To celebrate the 70th Anniversary of DUHWS we are attempting to climb all 214 Wainwrights in the Lake District in just 24 hours! The Wainwrights are the hills and mountains in the Lake District that Alfred Wainwright wrote about in his guides of the Lakeland Fells and it usually takes people years to climb all of them. They have a combined height of almost 140,000m and as far as we know no walking group has ever done this before so it's going to be a massive challenge!

DUHWS members will be aiming to raise donations to help support Mountain Rescue. Mountain Rescue operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year and does amazing work rescuing lost or injured people in the hills. They are made up entirely of volunteers and receive no government funding so fundraisers like this are incredibly important for them. The donations raised will be split 50:50 between Teesdale & Weardale Search & Mountain Rescue (the local team for County Durham) and the Lake District Search and Mountain Rescue Association which is the umbrella body for mountain rescue teams in Cumbria and distributes donations to individual teams.

Any donation, however big or small, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your support!

Please note all donations on this Justgiving page will initially be received by Teesdale & Weardale Search & Mountain Rescue. After the event is completed and closure of the fundraising page the charity will ensure 50% share of net proceeds are transferred to the Lake District Search and Mountain Rescue Association charity.
