‘Better Care, Healthier Lives’. We are the charity that exists to support St George’s hospitals and the communities they serve. Every day, our work makes a real difference to patients, their families and friends and the staff who care for them.

Story

Please help me raise money for the Neuro Intensive Care Unit at St Georges Hospital in memory of Tom, friend and loving brother-in-law and father.

Tom suffered a sudden and unexpected bleed into the brain on 29th April 2012. He was taken to the Neuro ITU at St Georges Hospital where he was treated and looked after until he passed away peacefully on the 6th May.

The staff on the Neuro ITU looked after Tom as if he was one of their own. They showed compassion, dignity and tenderness through out his stay on the unit, and provided invaluble support to the family through the hardest week of our lives.

Tom was a wonderful person and as well as being a loving brother-in-law and father was a good friend with a great sense of humour and everyone who knew him has the most wonerful memories of him and we are asking you to help us to honour those memories by donating to the Neuro ITU at St Georges Hospital.

We would like to raise £20,000 for an infra red spectroscopy machine and I would like to raise £5,000 towards this when I run the New York Marathon on 4 November 2012. This machine monitors brain oxygenation and it is hoped that it will help doctors manage a complication known as vasospasm. Vasospasm can cause further brain damage following a spontainous bleed into the brain and sadly as with Tom is often fatal. It is hoped that this piece of equiptment will allow a better outcome for patients who suffer bleeds into the brain. So please give generously, so that we can help the Neuro ITU unit improve the outcome for other patients who are unfortunate enough to also suffer an unexpected brain haemorrhage.
