I've done something very silly and signed up to cycle from London to Paris. If you know me, you'll know I'm not a cyclist. Actually, after being on a bike for 5 minutes my bum hurts and so given that this challenge involves cycling over 300 miles in four days, I am scared. 

What's not silly is the reason I am doing this challenge. 

I am raising as much money as possible for St Gemma's Hospice in Leeds. If you don't know their work then let me tell you from experience...

During the last few weeks of Patrick's life, he received the best quality of care we could have wanted. The care was outstanding during every step of his journey, from the prompt medical advice and intervention, to the emotional support and guidance. Patrick loved the beautifully decorated interior, plush comfy armchairs, warm hearted members of staff and calm, leafy gardens. We took humour from Patrick having his cans of Guinness in his own fridge as well as permission for pet animals to visit. It really was a home from home. 

This is of course free of charge to patients, however costs around £24,000 per day to run all of St Gemma's care and services. This invaluable service is completely reliant on public donations. Without crazy amateurs cycling from London to Paris, as well as a one off donation from a kind person like you, St Gemma's would not exist. 

Anyone, of any age or background, could be faced with the situation of needing palliative care and if you live in or around Leeds, St Gemma's is our local service.
