At the beginning of April 2020 I will be setting off from Cairo, Egypt with the aim of cycling solo and unsupported through 8 countries to the southern coast of Africa at Cape Town, South Africa.

I have a background in long distance cycling, which has included cycling solo from northern Canada, 15,000 miles to the southern tip of Argentina and more recently I have concentrated on ultra-endurance cycle racing (racing far, fast!). Cycling the length of Africa has been in my mind for years; the distance, the terrain, the cultures; and in 2020 I am going to go for it. 

This cycle is going to cover 11,000km and take me through some incredible lands. The searing heat of the desert in Sudan to the mountains of Ethiopia and there is sure to be an adventure along the way.

Through volunteer work in the UK at a community bicycle workshop I have seen the impact having access to a bicycle, a simple, reliable form of transport, has on people. Whether it is getting to school or work, accessing food, water or medical care, a bicycle is an enabler. World Bicycle Relief, who I am raising funds for, are an incredible organisation who help place bicycles where they are needed most.
