Story
Four years ago, a family we know had their lives turned upside down after their daughter Bel broke her neck in a freak climbing frame accident. This left her completely paralysed.
Four years on, Bel is completely dependent upon her parents and carers for 24 hour support and there are always improvements that can be made.
Bel's Uncle, Nick Young has very courageously leapt out of his own cosy comfort zone, and in September is going to swim the English Channel to raise funds for Bel. This is specifically to purchase and install a hydrotherapy pool.
Fewer people have swum the channel than have climbed Everest. It is an extremely brave, difficult and dangerous challenge.
In an attempt to support Nick and help him raise funds, my team of four have accepted our own challenge, consisting of the following:
- 50 miles on a bicycle, on and off road
- The ascent and descent of Helvellyn on foot
- A kayak expedition across Lake Thirlmere
All the above have to be completed in a competitive environment, as a team, at the end of August between sunrise and sunset. Approximately 30 teams take part.
Whilst not at Channel crossing standards, this is no easy task with significant opportunity for injury. However, by training hard, and embracing life in the knowledge of how lucky we are to be able to undertake such expeditions, unlike Bel, we will be ready to accept the challenge.
Any donation you feel you can make to this worthy cause would be greatly appreciated and wisely administered
Many thanks
