Story
Hi, thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I am raising money, in order to make a sustainable contribution to a country that needs our help and support.
My school, Chesham High Grammar has a long term partnership with The Sabre Trust (a not for profit charity) and has,for the past 5 years, annually been sending a select group of students to Brenu in Ghana, for a three week assignment.
Each year the student team in the UK works alongside the Trust and our international partner school in Brenu - to create projects that will have a long term impact on the health, wellbeing and education of the chidlren in the village.
Ghana is a small third world country, on the western coast of Africa( coloured in Yellow), between Ivory Coast and Togo. Because Ghana is a poverty stricken country, the country's infrastructure is in desperate need of improvement; particularly the education sector. The Ghanain Government is funding an extensive school building programme, however the demand for improved buildings far outstrips the capacity of this programme. This results in many rural schools in Ghana suffering from grossly inadequate or dilapidated school buildings.
UPDATE - 11 March 2010
After a final meeting with the Sabre Trust, the team and I have decided upon the projects which we are to complete:
- - Building a School Farm- We will be building a designated area within the school grounds, with shelters, fences and grazing areas for the animals. This will provide the school with a place to keep a variety of animals. We will also be teachiing the children how to look after and care for their livestock. This will allow the school to take the animals to market and sell the animals making valuble money for the school.
- - Malaria awareness project - alongside the children in Brenu school, we will be working to educate the school and community as to the most cost effective ways of preventing and fighting Malaria (4 out of 5 deaths in Brenu are caused by Malaria). this will include making publications, talking to the people of Brenu and introducing them to the most efficient options available.
- - Kindergarten sports day - a traditional event involving the younger children in the school. Typical events involve - lime and spoon race, sack races, three legged races and parents against children relays. The parents, PTA and other community memebers also come to watch, cheer and enjoy the fun - with prizes being presented at the end.
- Not only do we help with the our labour and ideas, but we plough some of the funds we have raised directly into the community, employing skilled local workers with specialist expertise to work alongside us.
I have individually committed to raise over £3000 in order to be part of the next project.
I have a strong commitment to impacting and improving the life of the the children in Brenu and hope that you will support me in any way you can, via donations, or any other form of contribution ( for example gifts such as football kit to take with, raffle prizes for an event that I run, or any sound advice and helpful contacts)
