Story

Alzheimer’s Society is a charity I knew very little about until my dad (Steve Freer) was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s back in 2017/2018 aged 58. He was most likely suffering in the years leading up to his diagnosis as we knew something was wrong but it was difficult to put a finger on exactly what it was. This condition and dementia are becoming increasingly prevalent in today’s society with age at diagnosis varying more as the years go on. It’s no longer something defined by age. As a charity the society has to fight for every bit of funding behind a number of main stream charities. Me and my good friend Jay Rawlins are taking on the challenge of trecking up Ben Nevis to help raise valuable funds for the charity. We want to help support them so that they can keep making positive differences to people’s lives and supporting families dealing with a family member suffering with Alzheimer’s or Dementia. Just as they have been since my Dad’s diagnosis, helping my dad and also my mum get to grips with at first an alien condition, helping and supporting them day to day and helping them access further support.

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.
