We‘re the world‘s leading cancer charity dedicated to saving and improving lives through research. We fund research into the prevention, detection and treatment of more than 200 types of cancer through the work of over 4,000 scientists, doctors and nurses.

Story

Please support the “JourneySouth2007.com” team in raising sponsorship for Cancer Research UK, and awareness of testicular cancer in young men, in their TYRE PULL UP BEN NEVIS 2006.

               JourneySouth2007” – what’s that then ?

From November 2007 through until February 2008, a four man team will trek unsupported from Hercules Inlet, Antarctica, to the South Pole. Alex Hibbert, Richard Smith, Andrew Wilkinson and Adam Griffiths will man haul everything they need for the expedition in pulks (sleds) weighing over 100 kilogrammes each. Once dropped off at Hercules Inlet by a Twin Otter aircraft, they will receive no outside assistance or resupply whatsoever, until reaching the South Pole.

Tyre pulling is a common training tactic to simulate the stresses involved with pulling heavy pulks, and to pull tyres up the United Kingdom’s highest mountain is a challenge indeed !!

Why Are They Doing This ?!!”

One of the team members, Richard Smith, is a twice-over survivor of testicular cancer, and the team as a whole are very keen to raise awareness of this increasingly common disease amongst young men.

In addition, once the team reach the South Pole in 2008, Richard will be the first cancer survivor to trek to the South Pole. Furthermore, Alex Hibbert will be the youngest Briton to reach the South Pole, and the youngest person in the World to lead a South Pole expedition !!

                    “Testicular Cancer – What’s That ?”

Testicular cancer is the most common cancer among young men between the ages of 15 and 35, and it can strike any male, any time ! Disturbingly, the incidence of testicular cancer around the world has doubled in the past 30-40 years ! There is no screening programme for testicular cancer, but self-examination is effective.

Further information about testicular cancer, how to perform a regular self examination, and how to treat it, may be found at …
