It’s a sad reality that older people are particularly vulnerable to social isolation or loneliness owing to loss of friends and family, mobility or income. It can be a terrible and frightening experience to see no-one for days on end. Every one of us is getting older, and regardless of circumstance it is something that we will all have to contend with. Hopefully, most people have the benefit of friends and family to help them along life’s journey. Sadly, many older people living in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan do not have this security and are all alone facing the uncertainty that old age can often bring. They may be recovering from illness or bereavement, struggling to cope financially or cope in any one or a dozen of ways. At Age Connects Cardiff and the Vale they find practical help and advice and people who care about the challenges they face. Our local charity makes a huge difference to the lives of so many older people who have nowhere else to turn and often are vulnerable, isolated and in poverty.

Story

Unfortunately, things are still far from normal in this brave new world we are all facing and this means the staff at Berry Smith have had to think outside the box to maintain our proud record when it comes to fund raising for our elected charities.

However, undeterred by the challenges of social distancing and travel restrictions, we are proud to present our latest novel fund raising event; the Berry Smith Virtual Three Peaks Challenge.

We have decided to set a new goal of walking, running and/or cycling the combined height of the three national peaks of the UK.  That this, the three highest peaks in Scotland (Ben Nevis), England (Scaffel Pike) and Wales (Snowdon) and the total distance we will need to reach is 462 miles!

The staff at Berry Smith have collectively pledged to travel the total distance of 462 miles over the course of the weekend of the 9th - 11th of April.  In other words, we are pledging to “virtually” climb the three peaks by walking, running or cycling the equivalent distance of the three peaks combined.  As an additional challenge, our staff aim to climb as high as possible by tracking the elevation of their induvial journeys, making this virtual challenge as realistic as possible in the current climate.

We have pledged to record and publish our collective distance travelled and elevation reached via our mobile apps and the monies raised from the event will be donated to one of our elected charities, Age Connects Cardiff & the Vale.

As ever, thank you for the support, it is greatly appreciated.
