Story
5 years ago I lost 3 friends in a motor traffic incident after a weekend climbing Mount Snowdon.
In their memory and in support of a mental health charity known as CALM, on the 13th October, I will be aiming to push a 70kg weighted sled the length of the longest path that runs up Mount Snowdon (the Llanberris track), which is a distance of 14.5km or 9 miles, and I’ll be attempting to complete this in under 12 hours.
CALM stands for the Campaign Against Living Miserably and is a mental health charity dedicated to taking a stand against suicide. Every week 125 people in the UK take their own lives, and CALM is on a mission to change that through their life saving helpline and by initiating conversations.
It’s a hard thing to say, but this year I’ve faced my own mental health challenges and in doing so I’ve realised just how important it is to get talking. And the best suggestion I can give is to talk to someone who’s trained to help. Sometimes you won’t know what to say, or how to say it, and that’s fine, but get talking.
By taking on this challenge it is my hope that I can honour my friends and do something that they would be incredibly proud of, but it’s also my mission to raise awareness for this charity and this subject, and even if just one person seeks out help as a result of this, then my job is done.
Thank you for taking the time to watch this, any donation is of course greatly appreciated, please keep an eye on my instagram page @betterwithbenfitness where I'll be sharing my progress
Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) is leading a movement against suicide. Every week 125 people in the UK take their own lives. And 75% of all UK suicides are male. CALM exists to change this by offering life saving services, provoking conversation and bringing people together to reject living miserably. From advice on our site, through to free, confidential chats with our helpline staff, online or on the phone, we’re here for whoever needs us, every day. No matter what. £8 is enough to fund one potentially life-saving call.
