Thank you to everyone who has donated to this appeal! If you would like to make a donation to help care for the habitats at Brockadale Nature Reserve then please use this JustGiving page.
Brockadale Nature Reserve evokes all of the senses; springtime in the woodland sees enormous displays of beautiful and delicate flowers including bluebells, wood anemones, violets and early purple orchids. Whereas in the summer butterflies by the dozen flutter past - marbled whites and dark green fritillaries are some of those who are magnifcent in their glorious colour.
This superb nature reserve which lies close to the village of Kirk Smeaton (in between Pontefract and Doncaster) has always been in two parts. Whilst the Trust has owned land in the area for many years, complexities in land ownership has meant that the nature reserve has never been connected (see map).
We have now raised the money required to buy the missing piece of land, which will add to the current 58.7 hectares currently under management as a nature reserve; it is also part of the Brockadale Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
The habitat that we will buy is floodplain grassland next to the River Went as well as some woodland, however it is has lost much of its value for wildlife over recent years. Therefore once purchased the Trust will restore it back to tip-top condition allowing wildlife to move along the Went corridor much more easily.
