Previously called the Early Births Fund, the fund was set up in 2003 with the aim of raising £250,000 to provide additional intensive care cots for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This goal was achieved in 2 short years. The fund has continued on to support babies, families & staff on the NICU.

Story

Our beautiful little Bonnie was born sleeping on Wednesday 30th October 2019 weighing a dainty 5lb. Throughout our pregnancy she had been known as our Little Pea because of the tiny dot that she’d been on the screen at our first scan. Pea was so loved from the very start and such a precious part of our family, as she always will be.

On Wednesday morning we were giddy with excitement to be induced and finally meet the perfect little girl who’d often hidden her face behind her hands or feet during our scans. The time was also getting close for Little Pea to finally meet her big fur-brother Frank (our French Bulldog) who had so carefully guarded her in my tummy. The next chapter of our adventure together was about to begin, this time with four instead of three.

Born sleeping at 8.10pm, Bonnie was nothing less than perfect, made with the best parts of her mummy and the best parts of her daddy. Our perfect Little Pea.

For the four days we spent in hospital we were cared for in the Daffodil Room. This room became our safe haven. It was away from everybody else, peaceful and quiet. It was safe and had everything we needed at that time. Both of our families were able to visit us and spend as long as they needed to with us in a comfortable and spacious room. Bonnie was able to spend time with her family; she had cuddles with us, her grandparents, her uncles and her Aunty Becky. We dressed her, swaddled her and told her how much she was loved. She was surrounded by our love and warmth, the only thing she’d have ever felt. The team of midwives that cared for us in the Daffodil Room were nothing short of amazing. The love, kindness and gentle care that they gave to Chris and I, as well as our families, was admirable. I’m so grateful that the Daffodil Room exists. It was hard to leave the room on Saturday afternoon and although we could have stayed longer, I was conscious that another family might also need to use that room.

Now that we’re home, Chris and I realise just how fortunate we were to have that room… Chris says that it saved us and I think he’s probably right!

In memory of our Little Pea, we would like to raise as much money as we can for the Little Roo Fund so that they can continue to support other parents and babies in our situation. Any money that is raised in memory of Bonnie will be used solely to support the Daffodil Room allowing families to spend special time together surrounded by their loved ones.

Thank you for reading.

Katie and Chris, Bonnie’s proud mummy and daddy. xx
