This year us girlies will be running at the Adidas Women’s 5k Challenge in Hyde Park.

 

We will be running for Tommy’s which works to fund medical research into premature births, stillbirth and miscarriage. They also have a dedicated telephone midwife service, a comprehensive website and free books and leaflets dedicated to promoting health in pregnancy and pre-pregnancy.

 

Key Statistics found by Tommy’s are as follows:

 

England and Wales 2009 

• 706,248 babies were born alive³ 
• 3,688 babies were stillborn³
• about 54,325 babies were born preterm⁴
• about 106,000 women experienced a miscarriage⁵

 

Expressed as the number per day:

• 1,935 babies were born every day
• 10 babies were stillborn every day
• about 149 babies were born preterm every day
• about 290 women experienced a miscarriage every day

 

They currently have three research centres in the UK, including St Thomas' in London, St Mary’s in Manchester and the recently established Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh, which focus their research efforts on different issues relating to pregnancy.
