We can turn £1 into up to £10 for wildlife……but we need your help
You can help Dorset Wildlife Trust release significant sums of money to help conserve and improve wildlife and habitats in our beautiful county. We have applied for over £300,000 of grants recently, but to unlock these we must urgently raise £71,000 – you can help us.
Here are some of our conservation projects that we have applied for grants for – all will directly benefit Dorset’s wildlife, habitats and people:
Important Ponds
Dorset’s surviving ponds are valuable wildlife havens. £5,000 is needed to release £50,000 from the Landfill Community Fund to enable us to create a network of new ponds and restore existing ones. Wildlife to benefit includes great crested newt and water vole.
Dorset Tree Link
Much of the wildlife in Dorset’s fragmented woodlands is suffering from a lack of management and from neglect. This project will bring 360 hectares of priority woodland under sustainable management, boosting wildlife whilst providing valuable products for the growing woodfuel market. For the first year we have to raise £14,000 to free-up a £14,000 grant.
Access to Green Spaces
We want people of all backgrounds to care about Dorset’s special places, to be inspired by them and to help conserve them. To this end £5,000 is needed to release £50,000 from the Landfill Communities Fund to further open-up a number of our nature reserves in the Bournemouth, Poole & Christchurch area for the benefit of local people.
Dorset’s chalk rivers
Dorset has a number of wonderful chalk rivers which have become neglected. This project will restore and improve the management of several kilometres of river and riverbank. We need £13,000 to unlock a further £13,000 this year. Wildlife to benefit includes our native crayfish, sea lamprey and brown trout.
Seabed Mapping
Our seas badly need sustainable planning and management, to ensure marine life, leisure pursuits and industry can thrive together. First though, we need to know what’s hidden beneath the waves. Our pioneering marine project will produce the first detailed habitat map of the seabed off a large section of Dorset’s coast and £20,000 is needed to release £200,000 from the Landfill Communities Fund to allow us to undertake a comprehensive seabed survey to identify our most important marine features.
Veteran Trees
Trees of great age are unique wildlife habitats; supporting species that cannot live elsewhere. We need £14,000 to release a further £14,000 from Natural England, to enable us to start recording 800 of our oldest surviving trees and ensure 20 are saved from felling or from a declining state.
Please help us seize this opportunity to claim a number of large grants by supporting this appeal today. Please give as much as you can. Every £1 you donate will release up to £10 for wildlife.
Thank you.
