Making Tracks - 500k cycle across Kenya · 5 November 2010
This November we are cycling across Kenya from Nairobi to Kisumu in five days in a bid to raise money for the Kenyan Orphan Project (KOP). There's no need to feel left out of helping the cause and you too can have a role.... Please sponsor us to help us beat our goal of raising £2400.
We are paying for our trip ourselves so every penny we raise goes straight to the charity. As we personally know the charity's founders and have been supporting it for some years we know that every penny does reach those most in need.
Once we've completed the challenge and arrived in Kisumu we will participate in some of the ongoing KOP projects before heading back home.
The money raised is going to be used to provide effective sanitation to orphans and vulnerable children in Kenya.
Sanitation has been chosen as the focus for the funds we raise as young children are particularly vulnerable to water borne and communicable diseases that arise through unsafe water, lack of adequate toilet facilities and poor hand washing practices. This then relates to large numbers of child deaths, chronic ill health, large rates of school absenteeism and subsequent impaired education and development.
More on KOP and what your money will do:
KOP does more than just build sanitation projects. KOP aims to commit to sustainable projects that will continue to assist local people for the long term and not just provide temporary relief. With their involvement in a number of different activities across all aspects of life, they also aim to improve communities as a whole and not just in one area of development. Central to all KOP activity are orphans and vulnerable children (OVC’s). The priority is always the improvement of the education, health, nutrition and social welfare of children. KOP see a healthy diet and a basic education as fundamental to the path from poverty and despair for so many OVC’s in Kenya.
