Jamie Box and Andy Crockfords - Wirral Hospice St John's - Mount Kilimanjaro, Machame Route Fundraiser

Mount Kilimanjaro is the worlds highest freestanding mountain and this trek is at extremely high altitude - it is 5895 metres tall (19, 341ft) Over 6 times the height of the UK's largest mountain. The walk will take approximately 7/8 days to complete - this is getting both up and down because of course it doesnt end once reaching the summit!

Why we are involved...

Jamie -

I am involved because sadly my mum, brother and me lost my dad in 2004 to cancer. He was only 38. The hospice were a true inspiration  to my family and ensured my dad was as comfortable as he could possibly be in his final days.

Since then the hospice have also cared for other family members - including an our ever 'crazy aunt' Jane and aunt Margaret - who both used the hospice for respite and ultimately palliative care.

Whilst on my last trek on the Andean Trail Peru ( my aunt Margaret lost her battle with cancer and was cared for by the team at St Johns. It was a challenging time but made the trek that bit more important.

I intend to continue where I left off and complete this climb in their memory.

Ultimately though, I am doing this to make incredible memories.

I have always been inspired by family and friends to achieve my goals and this is one of them.

Andy -

The hospice is such a special place, and really helps to make people's respite or final days as comforting as can be. It would be a privilege to climb such a big mountain on behalf of anybody ever to have used St John's Hospice. It would be a pleasure to be able to raise some funds to support such an incredible place.

The trek we have ahead is intensive, enduring and hard - but nothing in comparison to the hard work and effort put in every day by all at Wirral Hospice St John's.

Wirral Hospice St John's provides specialist palliative care and support for patients with severe and progressive disease, usually cancer, and their families.

The cost of providing care to patients and their loved ones is over £2.4 million per year and we are helping to reach this target with your support.
