Story
This July, Zack, Dylan and I are once again cycling to Cambridge for charity (and to prove to ourselves that we aren't THAT unfit. Hopefully). Apart from the fact that it's 60 miles and that Zack and I very rarely sit on a bike, this year presents an additional, emotional challenge for each of us. Believe it or not, we have done this before! Except in previous years, we have always had Dad by our sides. Initially he was there to put a helping hand in the small of our backs on the hills, to pay for the lunch, to have the stereo taped to his handlebars and to provide the emotional support when we realised that the years of university lifestyle hadn't been kind to us (usually about 40 miles in). The last time we did this ride, 2012, the tables had turned. Dad was battling with increasing fatigue, a result of what would soon be diagnosed as a return of his bowel cancer, and this time it was us that would help him to the end (although none of us were steady enough for the hand in the lower back trick....and Dylan never pays for lunch). Either way, Dad was always with us.
Most of you know, Dad died in October last year. There isn't a day that goes by that we don't think of him and miss him. Every time I drive past some middle aged man cycling in lycra I think to myself 'Dad would have liked that bike, and laughed at the lycra'.
So once again we ride to Cambridge. And remember Dad. Lycra Free.
We are raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support, a charity that had it's metaphorical hand in the small of Dad's back throughout his battle with cancer. We would appreciate any donations greatly.
