Here's the background to what we are doing......

 

I'm organising a "sleep out night" to raise money for the Simon
homeless community. This will be something similar to the project that was ran over
in Carrick-on-Shannon a few weeks ago in which numerous people camped outside
from 8pm to 8am.
The Gardai and town council will be informed of the sleep out, and
the public toilet facility nearby will be available. There will be a zero tolerance for
alcohol at the event, as this would defeat the purpose. Also no mattresses or pillows
will be permitted. Those taking part may wear whatever clothing they like along bring
along a sleeping bag and cardboard for use underneath if desired. I also have a soup
run sponsor for the night, which will provide those taking part in the sleep out with
hot soup and bread. The whole point is to create as close as possible the conditions
faced by thousands of homeless people around Ireland.
This is something in which I would need the kind help of other volunteers
(the more the better), who would be willing to help raise funds and take part in the
actual sleep out (this would take place on Friday 18th December around the town
clock on the Crescent)! The 18th of December is one of the longest nights in the
calendar year, and for the homeless it’s an even longer night!
So Far I have 25 volunteers who have kindly offered their services to help raise money and take part in the sleep out.
