Story
I’ve signed up to run the Oxford Half Marathon for Alzheimer’s Research UK, something I never thought I’d say.
My dad was diagnosed with early-onset dementia and has been in full time care since his early 60s. Dementia has also affected several other close members of my family and friends, so it’s something that’s been part of our lives for a long time.
Dad was always really active and was the one who got me into sport growing up, especially Rugby.
These days he’s no longer able to have a proper conversation, and when we visit, he doesn’t recognise us, including his grandchildren. That’s the hardest part.
This isn’t a sob story, but it is real life. For us and so many others. But it’s also the reason I wanted to do something positive with it.
I’m running to support the research that will hopefully lead to better understanding, better treatments, and ultimately a future where families don’t have to go through this.
If you’re able to support, even a small donation really does make a difference.
Thank you.
