Tinnitus is a condition of ringing, buzzing, whirring noise in one
or both ears. This can be constant or intermittent and can range from mild to very severe thus causing significant restriction to the suffers life as the symptoms ‘spike’ when they are exposed to stressors.
In 2015 and at the age of 49 I completed the Weymouth Challenge and raised £500+ for research and The Tinnitus Support Group
in Manchester. It was my first Iron distance, a 3.8k swim, 180 k bike ride and a 42k run. The ultimate in triathlon! After this I did a sprint triathlon in Clitheroe, then took a break and went to work in New Zealand from 2018 to 2020, Now I’m back and currently training for The Cromhall Sprint Triathlon on the 8th of June which is Swim 750m, Bike 18k, and Run 5k.
My story
I was diagnosed with tinnitus in 2006. In 2008 it became more
severe and with support from the NHS in Scotland I was able to manage the stress levels whilst studying for my degree in Mental Health Nursing. I did this by becoming more involved in triathlon. Prior to doing triathlons I was a cyclist and a swimmer. in 1990 I inspired colleagues to join me on the London to Brighton bike ride and raised four figures for The British Heart Foundation through company and individual sponsorship.
My triathlon history started in 1991 at the age of 25. In 2007 I did the London standard distance (1 mile swim, 40k bike ride, 10k run) for the charity Debra, where we created a whole Debra Wave for
the event, donned specially made tri tops and raised in excess of £1000. Between 2010 and 2012 I did the Huntly and Gullane olympic distance and the Loch Ore sprint distance triathlons, raised funds for the Clubhouse Coalition in Scotland to help people living in the community with mental health problems. Then after extensive training and completing individual bike rides, runs and swimming and the Yorkshire olympic distance triathlon came the Ironman as above.
Currently there are no formal treatments for this disturbing,
disruptive and potentially debilitating and life destroying disease. But there is hope! The BTA and researchers around the world are working hard to find a cure for tinnitus using therapies, biobanks, medications and other methods. As tinnitus is affecting more people every day I do hope you can give something to
help towards this aim.
