We have set ourselves the challenge of running an alpine marathon across Liechtenstein on 11 June 2022 to raise donations for The Eve Appeal, whose principal aim is to:

“Prevent gynaecological cancers and save lives by funding ground breaking research focused on developing effective methods of risk prevention, earlier detection and developing screening for all five gynae cancers [womb, ovarian, cervical, vulval and vaginal].”

Our motivation for this challenge is our mum (Jean Stubbs), who was diagnosed with advanced stage 4 womb cancer in May 2020, which had spread to secondary cancers in the Ovaries and peritoneum (cancer of the lining surfaces of the abdomen). Despite the obvious pain and discomfort that our mum has suffered, including through two rounds of chemotherapy, she has shown and continues to show incredible strength, bravery, and zest for life with those important to her - see the photo above of our family together at our mum’s 40th wedding anniversary meal with our dad a few months ago.

The symptoms that our mum suffered from prior to diagnosis were not particularly unusual, with occasional bloating and pelvic pain. Tragically, there is no cure for our mum due to the stage that the cancer had progressed to prior to diagnosis and only palliative treatment is available to her.

Neither of us are athletes and doing this challenge is literally a marathon task for us, but one that we are motivated to achieve in the knowledge that it will help others affected by gynaecological cancers in the future through the charity’s objectives (see above).
