Story
On 12th April, I will be running the Brighton marathon for Prostate Cancer UK. My wonderful dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2022, which was a really scary time. After 18 months of successful treatment, including 7 weeks of radiotherapy, he is now thankfully back to his old self!
I am hoping to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK to help fund lifesaving research and support for men and their families affected by prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the only major cancer without a screening programme and yet is the most common cancer in men with among 1 in 8 men getting it.
Early diagnosis increases the chances of a cure and can also often allow for less aggressive treatment options, so having a screening process is really vital to improving outcomes. As well as the other incredible work they do, Prostate Cancer UK have been researching and campaigning for a screening process for years and believe that we are now closer than ever to achieving this.
My dad's cancer was only picked up when it was because of an unconnected blood test (for which we feel incredibly lucky and grateful) so this is a cause particularly close to my heart.
Unfortunately for me and my competitive side, I won’t come close to my dad’s rapid 1982 London marathon time, but hopefully I can still make him proud by plodding my way round Brighton to raise money for this really important cause!
I would be so grateful for anything you can donate, and it would really mean so much to me x
