Goldsmiths vs Running

Brighton Marathon 2023 · 2 April 2023 ·
On the 2nd April, the two of us will be running our first (and quite possibly last) marathon in aid of Alzheimer's Society UK. As you may already know, Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia worldwide and brings with it profound challenges for those both living with it, and their wider families and friends.
There is not yet a cure for dementia. The Alzheimer’s Society was set up to develop free practical support mechanisms and advice, but also to advocate for a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, and able to live in their community without fear or prejudice. In these increasingly fractured times, it's important that this amazing work is made more widely available and communicated to those who may need it. And with it, a message of compassion, hope and love.
Having known close members of our own family who have bravely lived with this disease, you can feel yourself drowning a bit in passivity. Sometimes, 'just being present' isn't enough and you want to do something meaningful.
So... This is what we can* do:
We've completed a few half marathons before**. However, several weeks into training for the Brighton Marathon, we realize the enormity of the task ahead. Now increasingly grasping on to the last vestiges of our fading youth, knees have become 'a thing' and back pain is very real. Basically, training is far tougher these days. However, whatever suffering we will endure is nothing compared to those who feel the difficult direct and indirect effects of dementia on a daily basis.
If you're still reading, well done! Gold star for you. Given that this is a 'Just Giving' page, we'd be incredibly grateful if you could contribute anything you can afford towards this great cause. Or, if you'd rather just clap and/or shout motivational slogans at us between miles 20-26, that would also be totally ace.
Whatever you decide, thanks for reading, wish us luck, say a prayer.
Love,
James & Chris
