Story
I’ll be running the Brighton Marathon on the 6th of April in memory of my Grandma to raise money for Alzheimer’s society.
My Story -
I had to say my final goodbye to Grandma in October but I had been saying goodbye to her for a number of years.
Grandma was a fearless and independent woman, it’s how I’d known her my whole life but I slowly watched as Alzheimer’s took over her mind and mobility.
One of the hardest moments was when Grandma didn’t recognise who I was by my name anymore and asked ‘who’s Meg’ - I cried that day but I had to remember that we were experiencing a different version of her, a version that was beyond her control but she was still Grandma.
She had always been full of life, someone who had filled all our homes with laughter and warmth, but slowly began to slip away, her memories fading day by day.
Even when words failed her. Even when mobility was lost. Even when the world made less and less sense to her.
She was still Sheila. Still Grandma. Brave and courageous.
Alzheimer’s impacts so many families and it’s heartbreaking to watch a loved one deteriorate overtime and the Alzheimer’s society offer amazing support to those affected by it.
If you are able to donate anything to my page it would be hugely appreciated, no matter how big or small.
Thank you.
Meg
