Bromptons To Base Camp · 21 July 2022

The Gurkha Welfare Trust is the leading Gurkha charity. We provide financial, medical and community aid to relieve poverty and distress among retired Gurkha soldiers, their families and their wider communities.

Story

About the Challenge

A large portion of our staff are recruited from the Gurkhas, which is how we started our support of the GWT. We strongly believe in giving back to communities that sustain us, and we are taking on this challenge to bring clean water to rural communities (often comprised of Gurkha veterans).

Vigilance CEO, Seb, and COO, Ed, will be taking on the task of cycling to Everest Base Camp in October 2022. In what we think is a first, they will be doing this on Brompton Bikes, rather than mountain bikes.

Over the coming months we will update you with:

  • Route planning
  • Training updates
  • Where the money will be used
More about the Rural Water Project

Many villages across Nepal do not have access to a clean supply of water. Typically, households use either a substandard communal tap or fetch water from open sources.

Bringing a clean supply of water to villages in Nepal is life-changing. From improving health (contaminated water leads to serious disease and malnutrition) to releasing children from the daily burden of fetching water.

The GWT works in conjunction with the Government of Nepal to identify the neediest villages and build earthquake-resilient supplies of clean water via an individual tap stand outside each home.

The Bikes

Brompton has gifted us two incredible bikes to use (see below for some pictures!), which we are very grateful to them for.
