Bringing Lasting Relief and Hope in Burma
May 2008 was a month when Cyclone Nargis battered Burma, leaving more than 134,000 reported to be dead or missing. About 2 million survivors still struggle to obtain food, water and shelter, having lost everything to the power of the tidal surge. The world could only watch while the government refused external aid.
Fortunately, the Bible Society in Burma has been ideally placed to provide help and hope. Their General Secretary is chair of the Myanmar Christian Council Relief Committee which has brought together five established and respected agencies already working in the country. They have been free to address the immediate needs of survivors.
Now the Bible Society is asking for our help as people are facing the long haul of reconstruction, both physically and spiritually. The Bible Society is committed to providing: 10,000 bags of rice; 10,000 packages of clothing; 10,000 Bibles and 60,000 specially designed Selections.
In this way they can share the comfort and encouragement of the Gospel that is so badly needed, alongside the basic materials to sustain lives.
How can we respond?
First, we MUST continue to pray, second we CAN give something!
Even if you are not able to respond financially, the gift of prayer is available to all of us. We know that God will accomplish very much more than we can hope or imagine.
Yours sincerely,
John Doherty
General Secretary
