We’ve been improving the lives of those who work or have worked at sea, and their families, for over 100 years. Established in 1917 as The King George's Fund for Sailors, to support the families of seafarers lost at sea during World War One, we support seafarers throughout their career and beyond.

Story

Hello,

Burgess Yachts are entering a team in the 24 Peaks Challenge in aid of Seafarers UK, taking place over the weekend of 19-20 July, 2008.

The challenge is, as the name suggests, to climb 24 peaks in the Lake District (all of which are over 2,400 feet in height) in 24-hours walking time. Without doubt this is one of the UK's toughest challenges.

Day 1 is a gruelling day starting at 5:00 am from the base of Red Pike, and then taking in High Stile, High Crag, Green Gable, Great Gable, Lingmell, Scafell Pike (the highest mountain in England), Great End, Esk Pike and finally Bow Fell before dropping down in to the Langdale valley, and finishing at Stool End farm.  It is estimated that it will take 14 - 16 hours continuous hiking to cover the distance.

Day 2 is another 5:00am start, this time from Kirkstone pass, where we will climb Red Screes, Dove Crag, Hart Crag, Fairfield, Seat Sandal, Dollywagon Pike, Nethermost Pike, Helvellyn, Lower Man, Whiteside, Raise, Stybarrow Dodd, Watson Dodd and finally Great Dodd, before stumbling across the finish line in Matterdale.  It is estimated that it will take 10 hours or so to cover the second part of the trek.

This is one of the most demanding mountain events organised as a charity challenge and will be both physically and mentally tough.  However, it will be worth all the aching limbs and blistered feet knowing that all the money raised will go towards such a worthwhile charity.  Our target is to raise £5,000 and we would be very grateful for any donations received.

Seafarers UK is a national charity that fundraises and gives grants to over seventy charities that help people who have worked at sea. This includes helping people from the Royal Navy, Merchant Navy and fishing fleets and their families.  Seafarers UK aims to unite the maritime charity sector to address the specific needs of seafarers and their families. Seafarers UK is able to use its experience of working with the Royal Navy, Merchant Navy and fishing fleets to raise money and distribute it where it is needed.
