About Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice

Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice provides care for people across Peterborough, including Stamford and the surrounding communities.

It is the only specialist palliative care inpatient unit in Peterborough, with a 20-bed hospice providing expert palliative care and support for people who are living with a life-limiting condition, as well as supporting their families.

With a multidisciplinary team of doctors, Sue Ryder Nurses, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, complementary therapy, bereavement counsellors, and psychological and spiritual support, the hospice was recently rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission.

A Hospice at Home service also supports people in the local community who prefer to receive palliative care at home.

Whether someone is dealing with a terminal illness or the loss of a loved one, Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice is there when it matters to help people live the best life they can.

The impact of Coronavirus

In April 2020, Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice was forced to launch an emergency fundraising appeal to ensure it could continue to provide its expert palliative care and bereavement support.

The Coronavirus pandemic has had a huge impact on the hospice. All its shops closed overnight and fundraising activities had to stop immediately. This resulted in a deeply concerning drop in income and for the very first time the charity’s future was in doubt.

The hospice received a wonderful response to its emergency appeal from local people who have so far raised more than £324,000.

Unfortunately, the struggle is not yet over. Fundraising events remain cancelled for the rest of this year, and its charity shops have had to shut for a second time during Lockdown 2.0.

As a charity, Sue Ryder faces a funding gap of £2million each month due to the end-of-life funding crisis, while it continues to play a vital part in the Coronavirus effort. This is why the charity so desperately needs our support and in November Sue Ryder launched its second urgent fundraising campaign of 2020.

Community Fundraising Manager Joely Garner shared, “We know times are tough for everybody at the moment, so we are especially touched and humbled that the organisers and traders of the Burghley Christmas Fair are raising funds for us – every bit really does help.”

“Your support will help our hospice to continue to be there when it matters."

"Despite all the pressures our hospice faces, we can't stop caring. With the help of supporters like you continuing to raise vital funds for us we will continue to do whatever it takes to give the best possible care to people throughout this crisis. Thank you."
