Story
Former WRU commercial director Craig Maxwell and his family's lives were changed forever when he received a diagnosis of stage 4 lung cancer. In July 2023, he was given a prognosis of 10-18 months, significantly limiting the time he has left with his eight-year-old son Zach, 12-year-old daughter Isla, and his wife Tracey. Craig's journey began in June 2022, when a tumour was first identified. The official cancer diagnosis took a heart-wrenching 78 days to confirm. His diagnosis revealed a rare form of genetic lung cancer, rendering it inoperable and incurable at stage 4. Faced with this devastating reality, Craig set a courageous fundraising goal to support the QuicDNA (cancer genomics) project— an area that could dramatically impact the diagnosis of lung cancer in Wales. This project aims to reduce the time it takes to diagnose lung cancer and improve access to better cancer treatments through the use of a new, innovative liquid biopsy technique using a simple blood test. The QuicDNA project could see Wales become the first nation in the UK to routinely use liquid biopsy for all patients suspected of having incurable lung cancer. In addition to supporting this specific QuicDNA project, Craig will be raising funds for Velindre Cancer Centre who are currently caring for him and his family. Over 26 days, Craig will be walking 576 miles and cycling 204 miles, a total of 780 miles, of the Wales Coastal path, starting in Chester on Wednesday 14th February and ending at the Principality Stadium on Sunday 10th March for the Wales vs. France Guinness Six Nations match, where Craig accompanied by his children will carry the match ball onto the pitch. So far, Craig has raised 930,000 thousand pounds through incredible fundraising and is getting closer to his target of £1 million. I will be joining him and others on Days 20, 23, 24 and 25 walking 27.2 miles a day and cycling 57.3 miles on Day 22. The requirement is to raise a minimum of £500 a day, and I have an ambitious target of £2500. I am asking for your support, to make a real difference to lung cancer diagnosis and treatments in Wales. Please help me support this project, and charity close to my heart, by sponsoring me as much as you can. “With the four words "You have incurable cancer" our lives changed forever and our future was taken away. Tracey and I agreed that we will not let this control the time we have left together as a family. I will miss my children’s future. But whilst I can’t be there to give them the support I had planned to with Tracey, I can show them how strong and powerful people can be when we want to make a difference together."
