Story

Two guys, two bikes, two days to travel from Blackpool North Pier to Cleethorpes Pier to raise funds for The Sick Children's Trust Magnolia House, Sheffield. Who looked after Becky and Simon Gardner and here is there story as told by Becky..

"My gorgeous baby boy Acey Christopher Gardner was diagnosed at my 20 week scan as having Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH)  it is a birth defect that occurs when the diaphragm does not fully form, allowing abdominal organs to enter the chest cavity and thus preventing lung growth. As you can imagine from that day our whole world turned upside down. Acey was given a 50/50 chance of survival and that was only if he made it through pregnancy. I was offered a termination but we was so positive and hopeful that he would make it if we gave him every chance.

Acey was born 5 weeks early in Grimsby on May 1st 2016 weighing 4lb 10℥ he was transferred to Sheffield Children's Hospital the same day but i couldn't follow until the next day due to having an emergency cesarean section.
During one of our consultations before my son was born we was told that if he survived the first 48 hours he was very likely to go on to lead a normal healthy life. The repair operation, although carried risks, was not the life saver it was simply to put everything back where it should be. So at 5 days old Acey had his operation and we was told he was doing really well, although still very poorly. Because my boy had made it through the 48 hours and the operation, although big, was successful so we was full of hope.

But sadly 9 days after Acey was born and 4 days after his operation we was given the devastating news that there was nothing else they could do to help my precious boy that his lungs were just not strong enough. We laid with Acey until he passed away on May 12th. I can put into words how horrific this has been to my husband (Simon) and i as well as my family.

While Acey was in Sheffield Children's Hospital my husband, my 3 year old son (Ollie) and myself was offered accommodation through The Sick Children's Trust  at a place called Magnolia House which is just down the corridor in the hospital from where Acey was. Without this accommodation we could not of been so close to Acey and it gave us 24 hour access to be by his bedside

If it wasn't for Magnolia House we would have been left with the agonising ordeal of having to travel to the hospital everyday, in our case a 2 and a half round trip with the expense that would incur too. But worse of all having to leave our son not knowing if he would make it trough the night.  Whilst staying at one The Sick Children's Trusts' Home from Home is free of charge it does cost the charity £30 to support a family for one night. They rely entirely on voluntary income to meet this cost and that is why i am hoping to raise as much money as possible to support this life line for any family that may find themselves in this terrible situation.

Thank you so much for your support whatever you are able to donate will be extremely appreciated"
