I’ve chosen to fundraise for Young Sea Changers Scotland, as it’s a wonderful and necessary organisation that I’m proud to be a Trustee for. I’ve volunteered in various marine conservation roles for several years, but with this became all too familiar with the barriers faced by young people in accessing and being heard in decisions affecting the marine environment. Young Sea Changers Scotland (YSCS) was established to address these barriers, by providing training, education and support for young advocates aged 16-25 in Scotland, and opportunities for young people to have a seat at the table of important policymaking discussions. 

There’s a saying that goes ‘there’s no about us, without us’. The actions we take and policies we make that affect our marine and wider environment, also influence our collective future. But none more so than young people. We are due to inherit an uncertain future in the face of the biodiversity and climate crises, that is being shaped without our voices being heard. That must change, and YSCS is key to ensuring the inclusion of youth voices in policymaking. We want to help facilitate the positive, intersectional change we need to see to save our seas, with young people at the heart of that change.
