Story

Caldicot Male Voice Choir has a long and proud history of raising funds for local and national charities through its concert performances and in recent years has extended its efforts, together with its associated cycle club and golf society to raise an additional £40,000 for charities.

The Choir, inspired by the story of Nurse Jayne Carpenter from Merthyr Tydfil is organising a range of events in 2019 to support The UK Sepsis Trust, a charity which is raising awareness of the killer disease, Sepsis.

Events include sponsored cycle rides and challenges, table top
sales, quiz nights, Choir concerts, social events at its Choir hall, a golf competition and several others.

Even though a trained nurse, 49 year old Jayne just thought she had a minor cough and cold but this developed into pneumonia. Doctors told her she had developed neutropenic sepsis and without the amputation of both legs, an arm and four fingers she would certainly die.
Fitted with prosthetic legs, Jayne is now able to walk again and is determined to continue her world wide travels with her husband Rob.
Sepsis is a life-threatening illness which each year kills about 6 million people worldwide. It is caused by a body’s response to an infection. The immune system normally protects it from many illnesses and infections, but it’s also possible for it to go into overdrive in response to an infection.

Sepsis develops when the chemicals that the immune system releases into the bloodstream to fight an infection cause inflammation throughout the entire body instead. Severe cases of Sepsis can lead to septic shock, which is a medical emergency.
The UK Sepsis Trust was founded in 2012 by world-leading sepsis expert, NHS consultant Dr Ron Daniels BEM and seeks to save lives from Sepsis and improve outcomes for survivors, by instigating political change, educating healthcare professionals, raising public awareness and providing support for those affected by this devastating condition. It aims to protect people by enabling the prevention of severe infection and the treatment of Sepsis, whilst helping to ensure antibiotics are used responsibly.

Sepsis accounts for 48,000 deaths annually in the UK, that’s more than breast, bowel and prostate cancer put together. Sepsis is what happens when our immune system overreacts to an infection. Symptoms initially present as flu like but can rapidly deteriorate into a life threatening condition.
