Story
In celebration of World Down Syndrome Day on 21st March, team Callow Events are Rocking Our Socks for Mencap NI to continue to provide life changing services for local people living with a learning disability.
From 1st-21st March, each of the Callow Events Team (Leo, Jasmine, Erin, Caroline & Jess) will be walking or running 2.1 miles everyday, covering 220.5 miles in total!
We hope to raise £2,100 in total which could pay for an outdoor play structure to allow children with down syndrome to develop their gross motor skills and develop peer relationships.
Down syndrome is just one of many different types of learning disability. Most people have two copies of chromosome 21, while those with three copies of chromosome 21 have Down syndrome. This is why we are celebrating World Down Syndrome Day on 21/03 to represent the 3 copies of Chromosome 21.
Why socks? Human cells have 46 chromosomes. We inherit 23 chromosomes from our mum, and 23 from our dad. When you look very closely chromosomes are shaped like little socks, and they match into pairs just like socks too. People with Down syndrome have an unique extra copy of chromosome 21. The extra chromosome doesn’t match up, so this is why we wear odd or mismatched socks on World Down Syndrome Day. We will be walking our final 2.1 miles on 21st March together.
