Cambridge Rainforest Appeal
The Cambridge Rainforest Appeal has been set up to raise funds for the World Land Trust’s urgent appeal to save Orang-utans in Borneo.
In April 2008, with support from the Marshall of Cambridge Group of Companies, Kirsty Burgess, Conservation Programmes Manager of WLT carried out a site visit to Malaysian Borneo to identify a project that would make a real difference in saving the endangered Orang-utan. The outcome of the visit was clear: there was an urgent need to create ‘biodiversity corridors’ to link together protected rainforest reserves in a region devastated by forest clearance for oil palm plantations.
Oil Palm plantations have had a catastrophic effect on the rainforests of Borneo, which are some of the most diverse habitats in the world and vital for the survival of the endangered Orang-utan as well as other threatened species including the Bornean Pygmy Elephant and Malayan Sun-bear. WLT is urgently raising funds to purchase as much of the remaining forest as possible to protect continuous habitat for the remaining populations of wildlife.
The Cambridge Rainforest Appeal is helping WLT in its urgent bid to raise funds for the purchase of forest in the Lower Kinabatangan Floodplain to create a protected wildlife corridor between two larger forest areas. The area of forest that this project will protect supports a population of over 600 Orang-utans, and, with total project costs of £343,000, this means that the price of providing adequate habitat for one Orang-utan to survive is £568 per Orang-utan.
However, with the profits to be made from palm oil all the forests are under imminent threat. Time is running out and we need to act quickly. The Cambridge Rainforest Appeal has been established to save this particular corridor but, depending on how much is raised, there is much more forest in need of protection to safeguard the survival of Orang-utans in the region.
