Story
I’m taking on the challenge of the Brighton Marathon 2021 and it's not about me or my fitness, it’s about my step-dad.
On December 22nd 2020 my step-dad Phill collapsed in the bathroom at 4:00 am and was quickly rushed to hospital whilst me and my mum did our best to save his life in a state of panic and fear. After tests and consultations, we discovered Phill had Barlow’s Disease. Barlow’s Disease is degenerative and one of the more severe forms of heart valve disease. Heart valve disease is where "one or more of your heart valves becomes damaged or diseased, it can affect the flow of blood through your heart," (British Heart Foundation).
The inspiration for me to do the 2021 Brighton Marathon is to raise money and awareness for the charity Heart Valve Voice (UK). Supporting Phill and his journey from him being diagnosed, and the long road to recovery post-surgery. In recent months Phill has been able to share his story via BBC South Today, BBC Radio South, Parliament, and with support from our MP Tim Loughton. His candidness has seen him become a trustee for Heart Valve Voice.
We are grateful for the support of family and friends. The money raised will allow us to raise awareness for the small charity Heart Valve Voice.
