There is no Planet B, and time is running out. We're galvanising the engineering community to ensure it serves all people and our planet better than ever before. Together, we put global responsibility at the heart of engineering.

Story

A team from Engineers Without Borders, Cambridge branch is working with a local charity in Cameroon as well as Cameroonian engineering students to design and build gravity-fed clean water distribution systems in rural communities.

Many of Cameroon’s rural population walk several kilometres every day to fetch water or drink from unprotected and contaminated sources.

As engineering students, we will survey the land, carry out water quality testing and work with OK Clean Water, an NGO (non-governmental organisation) in the region, to design an adequate water catchment and distribution system for the community.

The project will be implemented in several phases, each necessitating funding for materials, construction costs, and transportation. Phase I involves collecting all the necessary data for design, including a social survey to establish the community's needs.

The second and third phases constitute the construction of the system and a follow-up assessment trip to check that it is functioning well and being correctly managed. The phase I trip took place this July.

A short term fundraising target of £5000 towards materials costs has been set for the end of 2011.

The project team would like to thank the following organisations and funds for their contributions towards their personal travel costs:

- Eric Lane Award Committee (£750)

- Mary Euphrasia Mosley Fund (£400)

- Queens' College Travel Grant (£350)

- Royal Academy of Engineering (£700)

and to Cambridge University Engineering Society for their £400 Micro Grant towards phase I equipment costs.
