We help people with mental health problems to still achieve their ambitions.

Story

I've been a mental health nurse for twenty years and over that time I have seen women of all ages suffering with the effects of extremely poor mental health which often leads to them ultimately harming themselves physically. This is generally due to internalised emotions and feeling isolated and unable to express themselves or share their story for fear of judgment.

The idea of this walk was inspired by realising that as women, we all find ourselves on similar life journeys and experience similar societal pressures and trauma which could lead to any one of us experiencing a form of mental distress and if not healed, a mental breakdown.

Five women were set to do this walk and due to various life events there is now just two of us left. Tragically one of the women - a dear friend and work colleague - killed herself in July due to a combination of life events and a history of poor mental health. She was only twenty-five, the fundraising target represents £100 for every year of her life, though of course she was worth much more to all who knew her. This walk is in memory of her and the women who have suffered and continue to suffer.

I currently work as a charge nurse on the Caburn Ward which is for women who are experiencing severe mental distress and are admitted because they may be of danger to themselves and others. We're aiming to support them by creating a safe and therapeutic space where they can express themselves without judgement. This will help them on their journey of recovery.

Your donation will help us to create a relaxing sensory space for patients, which they can use daily to help themselves and connect with others.

Walking the Camino will take five weeks and I aim to walk between 20km and 30km a day. This trip is self-funded and I would be so grateful for your generous donation in support of the women that I have the privilege to nurse on a daily basis.
