We fund long-term, sustainable research to find a cure for brain tumours

3 years ago Carlie was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer.  She underwent 21 rounds of chemotherapy (that’s over a year!) and 3 weeks of radiotherapy, then a mastectomy…she felt that she'd beaten it.

Lockdown began, and Carlie was classed as 'clinically extremely vulnerable', meaning she couldn't physically return to work.  In a bid to do something, she started walking every day with her sister Jasmine, exploring the local area, getting fit, and feeling good.

After a few months of persistent headaches at the start of 2021, Carlie visited the GP...various tests and investigations revealed a large tumour in her brain - secondary breast cancer. Fast forward 3 months and she'd had brain surgery to remove it and was recovering well. Things were looking up again and Carlie was enjoying life with family and friends.

However,  a week before Christmas 2021, the follow-up scans from the surgery showed that cancer had returned. She had several more tumours in her brain.

A targeted round of radiotherapy is now under her belt, and Carlie is back on track to maintaining a 'normal' life.  With follow up scans to come, Carlie and Jasmine decided to revisit the ‘getting focused’ idea and signed up for the Oxford Half Marathon in October 2022 (whilst drinking wine late one evening of course!) and from there the idea completely snowballed.

The sisters are now on a year-long mission to raise the profile of brain tumour research, increase funding and awareness -  whilst getting fit and making fun memories.

They plan to raise £27,400 by 31st December 2022 as this amount will fund just 10 days of brain tumour research.

They have a Facebook page called 'A Year To Remember - Brain Tumour Research which lists all the events and activities we have planned over the coming year. Please have a look and see if there's something that takes your fancy - there really is something for everyone!

This will be a story, an adventure and a chance for everyone to get involved and support a fabulous cause.

Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer. Just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this disease. We are a leading voice calling for support and action for research into what is called the last battleground against cancer.
