Mark's Great Grand Canyon Challenge · 10 May 2014

We are a registered charity formed in 2009 working in England and Wales to rescue stray, abandoned and unwanted Staffordshire bull terriers and related cross breeds, giving them all the care they need until they have can be rehomed. We have a non-destruction policy and an active rehoming procedure.

Story

In 2011 I did my first ever Sky Dive, raising over £1,000 for Happy Staffie Rescue. And last year I cycled 150 miles in 3 days to raise almost £2,000 for the charity. Now I'm set to embark on a new fundraising challenge, my most ambitious to date; a trek through part of the Grand Canyon.

It will be hot.Over 5 days, I will be trekking in consistently hot temperatures. Resting only briefly at midday. My aim is to raise as much money for Happy Staffie Rescue as possible.

The terrain will be the next challenge. This is no walk in the park, quite literally. While there are many well-walked paths through the Grand Canyon, the trails that will be used will test most people which is why the operators have advised me to train properly with proper trekking boots prior to the event.

And those things that creep, slither and crawl. We all knew about the rattlesnakes, but I was only watching a programme about the Canyon recently that we realised the world famous wonder is also home to the delightful black widow spider and numerous scorpions. It seems there are plenty of venomous creatures to provide me with some company.

I will be almost incommunicado. Lastly for anyone who knows me you will understand how I'm somewhat reliant on my mobile phone – phone calls, text messages, e-mails, Facebook, Twitter, the official Happy Staffie Rescue web site. Well, but for the beginning and end of my journey it is likely I’ll be completely incommunicado; unable to reach family or friends. This may be a blessing to some, but will no doubt present another very real challenge to the man who thrives on social contact.
