Story

Abu Hurera is a four-year old boy who presented to Shaukat Khanum Walk-in–Clinic, Lahore on December 8, 2016 with complaint of high grade fever and generalized weakness with weight loss for last six weeks. His parents also noticed development of swelling in his neck and got his biopsy done at a local hospital. The biopsy sample was analysed at the Pathology Laboratory of Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC) and he was diagnosed with “Hodgkin’s Lymphoma” (a type of cancer). At SKMCH&RC, Lahore, his detailed examination and relevant investigations including bone marrow biopsy confirmed the diagnosis. His treatment commenced with chemotherapy. The first cycle of chemotherapy was administered to him on January 6, 2016. According to his treatment plan, he will be given chemotherapy and will be revaluated after few cycles for disease response. He is tolerating chemotherapy well.

There is those memories you make during your life that become images & sounds embedded in your mind - that can replay with the accuracy of every particle of dust being in the same place as it was when that moment happened. For me, that one flash of light was when I saw my dad toss side by side in pain during his last month of battling with Cancer, and with every move he said something that sounded like an oxymoron: "Thank you God"? While you are still breathing is every moment to be thankful for, he said & an opportunity to repent & do something worthwhile.

Eventually it was over, like it will be for all of us. But to watch your loved ones suffer can be more traumatic for you than the ones suffering themselves. It's therefore not an opportunity to save a life, because no one can - but an opportunity to make a difference in someone's life. It's an opportunity to create a world in which compassion for our fellow humans takes precedence. Let's help this little human defeat cancer - so he can return to living a life every 4 year old aspires to live, and grows to fulfil his limitless potential as an individual (I am told he is an inquisitive young fellow who jumps at every opportunity to break toys down out of his curiosity to learn what's inside). Let's help raise a child who, when he grows up, believes in humanity and in helping each other with whatever unique blessing we have been endowed with. Let's bring a smile & relief to his family who do not have the means to support him financially in this struggle & rely on you & I.

I am sponsoring this child's treatment for Hodgkin's Lymphoma at Shaukat Khanum Hospital - if you would like to be a part of his please feel free to donate on this page.
